My horror film has to have representation. So, I decided to use LGBTQ+ representation in mine. In the story, Janelle has a girlfriend. Very sweet! As a part of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I believed that this was the perfect representation to add into my story. Not many movies add these kinds of relationships, and are shunned by some people in society. However, there has been a shift.
Films depicting characters that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender have been more prevalent over the past several years as LGBTQ+ representation in media. The LGBTQ+ community has made considerable progress as a result of the rise in representation since it raises awareness and encourages acceptance. Although there is still a long way to go in terms of appropriate and varied representation, it is encouraging that more films now feature LGBT characters and plotlines. It not only promotes acceptance of all sexual orientations and gender identities, but it also offers exposure and representation for individuals who have traditionally been marginalized in the media.
The LGBTQ+ community has steadily seen more representation in movies throughout the years. In 2021, 44 major studio films were released, and according to a research by GLAAD (previously the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), 10.2% of those films had LGBTQ+ characters. This is an improvement over the previous year, when just 18.6% of newly released films featured LGBT characters in any capacity. Eight of the ten LGBTQ+ characters in these movies were white, according to the survey, highlighting the need for more diversity representation in the community. Even yet, the growing trend of LGBT representation in films is a huge step in the direction of fostering inclusion and acceptance for the LGBT population.
